Rod of Asclepius

Hygieia and Asclepius
Bertel Thorvaldsen
Hygieia Feeding the Snake on the Rod of Asclepius,1808.
The Thorvaldsen Museum, Copenhagen.

The medical symbolism connected to the staff and snake has descended from Greek mythology in connection with Asclepius, the god of medicine, and his daughter, Hygieia, the goddess of health. Here she is giving a health-giving drink to the snake winding itself around Asclepius’ staff. The scene is an allegory of “Health”.
